Ferguson Park
Through rigorous analysis and community collaboration, Rialton Fergusson Park is home to one of the Inland Empire’s premiere ice rinks. Inspired by the passion of a local family that has championed the skate park for years, we began the design process with the goal of creating a state-of-the-art facility that would harmoniously serve both transitional and street skaters. Using local inspiration, we went back to the drawing board and developed a unique concept that would effectively utilize the existing road surface while maintaining a sculptural and aesthetic quality. The final design features both modern urban architecture and traditional backyard pool skating. Their friends from the RHA landscape architects office also contributed to the skate park with an innovative shade design.
On October 11, a $6 million upgrade will begin at Alec Fergusson Park, including two new soccer fields. The City of Rialto plans to complete this upgrade in October 2011. Fergusson Park is located at 2395 W. Sunrise, near West Casa Grande Avenue and North Alder Street. “We plan to more than double the use of Ferguson Park,” said Director of Recreation and Community Services Larry Thornburg. Eight hectares of this 18-hectare park were previously developed. That project will develop the remaining 10 acres.” In addition to the soccer fields, new amenities at Fergusson Park include a skate park, playground, rest areas, additional parking, an additional basketball court and a snack bar/restroom. Rialto contractor Robert Clapper Construction submitted the successful bid for the project. “We R.C. Construction is very excited about the opportunity to provide construction services to our hometown here in Rialto,” said Robert Clapper, CEO of the company. “The headquarters of our company is located less than a kilometer from the park, so we have a good opportunity to pay special attention to the project. We hope residents will enjoy the park for years to come.” Funding for the park comes from a $6.3 million community improvement loan the Rialto Redevelopment Agency received in 2008. Fergusson Park is one of Rialto’s nine city parks. In addition to the new amenities, the 8-acre park includes an existing basketball court, a quarter-mile walking trail, a picnic area, two tennis courts, horseshoes, a playground and a softball field.
