Fiesta Park
Fiesta Park was an amphitheater and sports and entertainment venue in South Park, Los Angeles, California. From 1894 to 1916, it was the site of several exhibitions and festivals, as well as the site of USC Trojans soccer games. Fiesta Park was located on a block bounded by Grand Avenue, 12th Street, Hope Street and Pico Boulevard. The lot was originally owned by banker and undertaker Victor Ponet, who also founded Evergreen Cemetery. From 1894 to 1916, it hosted La Fiesta de Los Angeles, a spring parade and festival celebrating the multicultural heritage of Los Angeles.
In 1901, then president William McKinley was on his way to the West Coast as the guest of honor of Fiesta. Around the turn of the century, the square hosted a variety of sports and entertainment events, from football and baseball games to pony races and productions of “Faust.” Fiesta Park has been home to several baseball teams, including the Los Angeles Trilbeys and the Los Angeles Echoes. The field was the home ground of the Los Angeles Rangers soccer club, which consists mostly of expats. In 1910, Fiesta Park was covered with a large canvas and used as the venue for the Los Angeles Auto Show. This event coincided with the transition from football to rugby by many California schools, thus after the 1910 Auto Show, Fiesta Park was used primarily for marquee exhibitions, although the bleachers were renovated in time for the 1916 football season.
