Moreno Valley Veterans Memorial
Dedicated on June 14, 2007, the $1.3 million star-shaped monument features large granite panels engraved with the names of Moreno Valley soldiers who died in battle. The centerpiece of the monument is a bronze sculpture of a battlefield cross, “Fallen Soldier,” by Richard Rist of the Greater Art Company of Baltimore, Maryland. The sculpture is military boots, an M16 rifle with the barrel down between the boots, and a combat helmet on top. Plaques engraved with the names of military veterans and landscaping such as olive trees and a rose garden planted by the Moreno Valley Garden Club surround the memorial.
The idea for the Moreno Valley Veterans Memorial came from a presentation to the City Council by Mary Carriere, whose son, Corporal Jason Tetrault, was killed July 9, 2003, in Kuwait. After discussion, the city council approved funding for the design of the Moreno Valley Memorial and a committee consisting of Mrs. Carriere, Mayor Charles R. White, Mayor Pro Tem William H. Batey, II, Laura Froehlich and Kevin Kearby. was formed to work on that important project. The Military Appreciation Banner Program recognizes active duty military men and women who are residents of Moreno Valley, have family members living in Moreno Valley, or are graduates of Moreno Valley High School. The Veterans Memorial Paving Program recognizes veterans and active service men and women. In the middle of John F Kennedy Veterans Memorial Park is the Moreno Valley Veterans Memorial. This monument is a tribute to all the servicemen and women who have served our country. The monument has a bronze sculpture of three tall and proud soldiers. It is a beautiful and moving sight, a must-see for anyone interested in military history.
