Rialto Park
Ancient artifacts found by archaeologists indicate that the present-day city of Rialto was inhabited before 1500. The Serrano Indians lived in the area between 1500 and 1800 AD. In 1842, the Lugo family was granted “Rancho San Bernardino”, a 37,000-acre piece of land that included the Rialto. In 1887, the Santa Fe Railroad through Rialto established a rail connection between San Bernardino and Pasadena. The first school was built in the fall of 1888. The Rialto School District was founded in 1891. The staff included two teachers and a principal, and there were separate playgrounds for boys and girls. In 1893 there were half a dozen businesses and 35 homes. In the 1920s, a fire broke out and destroyed many buildings in the city center. Today, the town is located between Interstate 10 and State Route 210. Rialto is served by a Metrolink regional train on the Metrolink San Bernardino Line and Rialto Station. Foothill Boulevard was repaired in 1913 and became the U.S. Route 66, part of the US highway system, passes through the city. In 1914, the Los Angeles Pacific Electric Railroad completed the San Bernardino line through the town of Rialto. In the 20th century, orange cultivation was the largest industry in the city, with more than 10,000 orange trees.
